City Palace - Jaipur

City Palace, Located in the heart of the Pink City Jaipur, which includes the Chandra Mahal and Mubarak Mahal palaces and other buildings. The palace complex, located northeast of the centre of the grid-patterned Jaipur city, incorporates an impressive and vast array of courtyards, gardens and buildings. The palace was built between 1729 and 1732 AD by Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amber.. It was the place of the Maharaja of Jaipur, the head of the Kachwaha Rajput family. The Chandra Mahal palace now converted into a museum but the greatest part of it is still a royal residence. Later Sawai Jai Singh II planned and built the outer ramparts, and additions were made by successive rulers continuing up to the 20th century. City Palace is designed and structured by two famous architects namely, Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, the chief architect in the royal court and Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob, apart from the Sawai himself who was a keen architectural enthusiast. The architects achieved a fusion of the Shilpa Shastra of Indian architecture with Rajput, Mughal and European styles of architecture. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II is known to have custom-made work for building the outer wall of the city's compound. He shifted from Amer to Jaipur due to water problems and an increase in population in 1727. The architect went on to design the City Palace in accordance with the Vaastu shastra texts. Some of the famous gates are the 'Udai Pol', 'Jalebi Chowk', 'Tripolia Gate' and 'Virendra Pol', which extends to be the various entrances to the palace. These are all richly decorated. It is a unique and arresting complex of several palaces, pavilions, gardens and temples. The Palace has been designed according to a 'grid style' and houses various structures such as, 'Chandra Mahal', 'Mubarak Mahal', 'Diwan-I-Khas' and the 'Govind Dev Ji Temple designed with impact of Mughal style, with various murals, lattice and mirrors adorning them from sides..
